About Cataract Surgery.

One should consider cataract surgery when your cataracts have progressed enough to affect your daily life. Many people consider poor vision an inevitable fact of aging, but cataract surgery is a simple, relatively painless procedure to regain vision. Cataract surgery is the most frequently performed surgery in the United States, with over 2.4 million cataract surgeries done each year.

How is cataract surgery performed?

Before surgery, special measurements will be taken of your eye to determine the prescription of your lens implant. Medical tests, such as an EKG, may be needed if appropriate, and a medical clearance must be obtained. Our office will contact your insurance company to obtain pre-certification.

During cataract surgery, your surgeon removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear, plastic intraocular lens (IOL). At Kindermann Eye Associates we are pleased to offer cataract surgery at our outpatient, ambulatory surgical center, located at Wills Surgicenter in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where more state-of-the-art eye surgery is performed than at any other facility in the area. This is a highly specific operating facility that is inspected and licensed by the government. Delicate electronic equipment and excellent nurses and personnel are there to offer a comfortable, friendly and supportive environment for undergoing cataract removal.

Upon arrival for surgery, you will be given eye drops and perhaps medications to help you relax. A local anesthetic will make the operation painless. The skin around your eye is thoroughly cleansed, and sterile coverings are placed around your head. Under an operating microscope, a small incision is made into the eye that rarely needs to be sutured. The surgeon uses ultrasound energy to break it up and then remove it.

A tiny IOL is placed inside the eye to replace the natural lens that was removed. This lens is prescribed for the patient to reduce the need for glasses after the surgery as minimal as possible. Cataract surgery usually takes less than 15 minutes.

When the operation is over, the surgeon places a shield over your eye. After a short stay in the outpatient recovery area, you will be ready to go home. You will need to make arrangements for someone to drive you home.

How can I be assured of receiving the best possible results?

Our Training: Dr. Reed Kindermann trained with Dr. Charles Kelman of New York, the inventor of phacoemulsification. He also trained with Dr. Turgut Hamdi, the first surgeon in the USA to implant a artificial lens after cataract extraction. In addition, Dr. Kindermann trained with notable regional surgeons Dr. Oram Kline and Dr. Raymond Adams, both of whom were early pioneers in cataract surgery.

Dr. Kindermann continues to take and teach courses in cataract surgery. He was one of the first surgeons in the USA to implant a multifocal artificial lens (the Array Lens, 1994), and continues to teach and perform the most modern techniques.

Dr. Mary Makar was trained at the Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia and has extensive experience in cataracts, cataract surgery, and cataract care.

Our Equipment: We take great pride in investing in the latest, state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to aid us in achieving the best possible outcomes for cataract surgery. This equipment includes Zeiss IOLMaster II, the Marco Wavefront Analyzer, and the Sonomed Ultrasound.

Our Effort: Every patient is carefully examined before surgery. All testing is duplicated in parallel to double check all measurements. This allows the highest possible accuracy in determining which lens power will suit you best.

What kind of lens implants are available?

In our practice, we utilize a variety of lens implants to choose the best lens for each of our patients. These include silicone and acrylic lenses from various manufacturers, and aspheric optics to minimize after surgery glare.
