Dr. Reed Kindermann
W. Reed Kindermann, MD graduated from the University of Pennsylvania
and the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He completed his
Ophthalmology Residency at Wills Eye Hospital and attained fellowship
training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus under Drs. Robison
Harley and Joseph Calhoun at Wills Eye Hospital. He completed additional
training under noted cataract surgeons Charles Kelman of New York, the
inventor of phacoemulsification; Turgut Hamdi of Wills Eye, member of
the first team in America to implant an intraocular lens, and Oram Kline,
the first surgeon in South Jersey to perform phacoemulsification.
Honors:
Dr. Kindermann has been honored repeatedly in the "Best Doctor" sections
of Philadelphia Magazine, New Jersey Magazine, South Jersey Magazine,
Best Doctors of America and Checkpoint Magazine. He is a recipient of
the coveted "Silver Tray" presented yearly at the annual Wills Eye Conference.
Certification:
Dr. Kindermann is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology,
and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the New Jersey
Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive
Surgeons, and the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and
Strabismus.
Appointments: Dr. Kindermann holds dual appointments in the Cataract / Primary Eye
Care and Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Departments at Wills
Eye Institute.
Teaching:
Dr. Kindermann has been an instructor in cataract surgery at Wills Eye
and Cooper Hospital as well as many international forums. He has provided
instruction in cataract surgery and provided surgical cataract surgeries
in dozens of foreign countries. Dr. Kindermann has also been an instructor
in pediatric ophthalmology at Wills Eye Cooper Hospital, in many national
and international eye forums, and as a volunteer teacher and surgeon
in dozens of foreign countries
Emphasis: Dr. Kindermann developed a strong interest in cataract surgery during medical
school. He first trained with his uncle in New York and later with Dr.
Charles Kelman, the inventor of phacoemulsification and Dr. Turgut Hamdi,
who participated in the implantation of the first intraocular lens in
the United States in 1950.
Dr. Kindermann maintains a strong emphasis on cataract technological
advancements, especially surgical instruments and intraocular lenses.
He was a participant in the first clinical trial of multifocal intraocular
lenses with the AMO corporation beginning in 1994. This lens, the "ARRAY"
lens, was approved by the FDA and was the first certified intraocular
lens verified to correct both near and far vision. Dr. Kindermann implanted
hundreds of these lenses before this lens was discontinued prior to introduction
of second generation products.

Toric intraocular series, the Staar Toric Lens Series).

intraocular lenses including the Alcon ReStor lens series, the AMO Tecnis
Multifocal lens series, and the Bausch and Lomb Crystalens series.

Dr. Kindermann is an expert in the field of eye alignment
problems. He provides consultation, medical and surgical treatment for
a wide variety of ocular alignment problems including:
- Horizontal alignment disorders.
- Vertical alignment disorders.
- Disorders due to medical problems such as thyroid eye disease.
- Disorders due to cranial nerve palsies.
- Disorders
due to congenital birth defects.
- Disorders of ocular alignment following
injury or other surgeries.
- Precise prism
measurements.
- Adjustable suture surgery, which provides for
post-operative fine tuning of surgical movement of ocular muscles to
optimize operative eye positions.
Surgical Outcomes:
